As a teacher ...

Shawn Hines has been a respected and sought-after music teacher for nearly 20 years, teaching privately and in classroom settings at elementary, junior high, and high school levels, as well as college and conservatory level.

He has taught trumpet at The Ecole du Jazz in Lausanne, Switzerland in addition to having taught in public schools in Florida and at Providence College in Rhode Island. His teaching credentials include Bachelors and Masters degrees (trumpet performance and jazz pedagogy) from the University of Miami where he studied with the great Gilbert Johnson.

Other teachers include, Bill Clark (NBC Orchestra), Charlie Schleuter (Boston Symphony), Darren Barrett, Andy Omdahl (US Navy School of Music), Jeff Purtle, and John Georgini.

Shawn has appeared with many artists and bands including jazz artists Tony Bennett, the Cab Calloway Orchestra, Kendrick Oliver's New Life Jazz Orchestra, and the Big Band of Lausanne; salsa artists Celia Cruz, Willy Chirino, Roberto Torres; jazz groups Walter Davis, Jr - Bob Mover Quintet, Robin Kenyatta; pop groups the Spinners, the 4-Tops, the O'Jays; and local function bands Moonglow, Hip Pocket, and Brass Attack.

All students are accepted, from beginner to professional.
The primary method used is Claude Gordon's Systematic Approach to Daily Practice and the focus is on developing the power, range, control and accuracy required to play any style of music.
Lesson materials are drawn from several of the the standard trumpet books, including Clarke's Technical Studies, Clarke's Characteristic Studies, Arban's, St. Jacome's, Walter Smith Flexibilities, Irons Flexibilities, and others as needed.

Lessons are available in person in Providence and Boston or online via webcam.
